Want Better Mornings? Try My Routine That Actually Works

Creating a morning routine that energises you, sets the tone for the day, and gives you time for yourself (before the chaos begins) has been a game-changer for me.

In this blog, I’m sharing my current morning routine—from the moment I wake up to when I walk the kids to school. It’s simple, intentional, and built around habits that support my mindset, energy, and family life.

My morning routine often shifts depending on my priorities, projects, and the needs of my kids—it’s not set in stone, but it’s designed to help me get the most out of my day; there’s no one-size-fits-all approach, the key is finding what works best for you.

As soon as my alarm goes off, I jump out of bed and run to the laundry to turn it off. Why the laundry? Because that’s where I charge my phone overnight! It’s intentional—I don’t want to fall into the trap of checking messages or notifications first thing in the morning. To help with that, I also set my phone to flight mode before bed, which means no distractions the moment I wake up.

From there, it’s straight to the bathroom. I’m working on building the habit of tongue scraping (inconsistent at the moment, but I’m getting there). I also weigh myself—just a quick check-in, nothing obsessive.

Then, it’s time to hydrate. I drink 700ml of filtered room-temperature water with freshly squeezed lemon and half a teaspoon Redmond Sea Salt. The lemon helps alkalise the body and aids digestion, while the salt (rich in minerals) supports hydration and adrenal health. It’s a simple ritual that helps me feel refreshed and awake from the inside out.

While sipping on my water, I say to myself:

“Today is going to be the best day ever.”

I then grab a non-fiction personal development book and read for 10–15 minutes. Filling my mind with something uplifting or inspiring first thing helps set the tone for the rest of the day. (Currently, I’m reading Storyshowing: How to Stand Out from the Storytellers by Sam Cawthorn and really enjoying it.)

Mornings are the hardest for me. My default mode tends to be self-doubt or negativity — especially first thing after waking up, when it felt like my subconscious had been dwelling on everything that went wrong.

That’s why I start my day with small, grounding habits — like repeating a positive phrase, reading something uplifting, or even journalling whatever’s weighing me down. These little rituals help shift my focus and lift my mindset.

It’s also why I need me time in the morning. If I’m up at the same time as my family, I can be a downer for the first half hour. Giving myself space to reset makes a huge difference — for me and everyone around me.

Each morning, I either slip into my study to tackle the tasks I mapped out the night before or jump into key household duties—like sorting dinner—to set the tone for the day.

Planning my priorities the night before means I can dive straight into action without wasting time figuring out what needs doing. This short window is my time for admin and prep—giving me clarity, momentum, and a calm head start before the rest of the household wakes up.

At 7:00am, it’s time to wake the kids—then I head straight into the kitchen to make breakfast. Here’s what a typical morning looks like for us:

For the kids:

Banana Pancakes – Just 2 mashed bananas and 4–5 large eggs make a super simple, protein-packed brekkie they love.

Protein Milk – Hot or cold milk with about a third to half a scoop of Bulk Nutrients protein powder (Chocolate is the current favourite).

Three banana pancakes cooking in a frying pan on a stovetop.

For my husband: A couple of fried eggs.

For me: Two fried eggs with a side of chorizo or smoked salmon.

On busy mornings: I’ll go for a quick smoothie—my go-to is a Breakfast Smoothie – Vanilla, Banana, Avocado & Cinnamon.

Starting the day with a protein-rich breakfast makes a huge difference. I feel calmer, more focused, and much less tempted to snack before lunch—and I’ve noticed the same with the kids too.

Yes, it takes a bit of effort, but making breakfast has become one of my favourite parts of the day. We chat, laugh, and connect—it’s a little daily ritual that fuels us physically and emotionally, setting the tone for a positive, grounded day ahead.

Time to get myself ready! Here’s the quick rundown:

Rolling my face in the mornings!
  • Skincare: Cleanse, apply my go-to Nutrimetics “Botox” serum (seriously makes my skin feel plump and smooth), and finish with a 2-ball roller for lymphatic drainage. It’s amazing for reducing puffiness and tension—especially around the cheekbones. I’ve also noticed a huge difference in how sculpted my face looks.

Then it’s a quick tidy-up, make the bed, and get dressed for the day.

By 8:30, we’re off! I walk the kids to school (movement + quality time), and then I grab my coffee and get stuck into work, ready to go.

This morning routine has truly helped me stay grounded, energised, and present for my family and myself. It’s not perfect every single day, but the consistency of these simple steps—hydration, self-talk, reading, connection, and movement—helps me show up as the best version of myself.
