Take Back Control: Stop Playing the Victim and Start Transforming Your Life!

If any of these questions strike a chord, it’s time to step out of the victim mindset and reclaim your power. By making a bold and intentional choice, you can take control of your life.

For me, this New Year my word of the year is transformation. It’s a powerful concept, isn’t it? Transformation isn’t just about change—it’s about evolving into the best version of yourself.

But how does transformation actually happen? That question took me down memory lane to a book I read over 13 years ago: The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. If you haven’t read it, add it to your list. If you’ve read it but forgotten about it (like I did), this is your reminder to revisit it.

In the book, Tolle outlines three choices we always have in any situation. These three options hold the key to your transformation:

  1. Accept It
  2. Change It
  3. Move Away From It

Let’s unpack these a bit—and maybe have a little fun along the way.

Sometimes, life throws you into situations you just can’t change, no matter how hard you try. So what do you do? You accept it. Not grudgingly, but fully, with peace in your heart.

Why It Matters: Fighting against reality only creates stress and frustration. Acceptance, on the other hand, frees you to focus on what you can control.

Example: Picture this—you’re stuck in traffic, running late, and there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it. Instead of honking your horn and fuming, take a deep breath, turn up your favourite playlist, and enjoy the moment. Acceptance is a superpower—it shifts your energy from chaos to calm.

Here’s where the magic happens. If you’re not happy with something and it’s within your power to change it, do it! Transformation thrives on action.

Why It Matters: Ignoring a problem or hoping it’ll fix itself rarely works. Taking action, even small steps, builds momentum and confidence.

Example: Hate your job? Instead of scrolling through job listings and sighing, update your CV, start networking, or take a course to level up. Change doesn’t have to be instant, but it does need to be intentional.

If you can’t accept it, and changing it isn’t an option, the healthiest choice might be to move away. Walking away is not weakness—it’s wisdom.

Why It Matters: Staying in toxic or unfulfilling situations drains your energy and happiness. Moving on clears space for better opportunities.

Example: Maybe there’s a friendship that’s become more draining than uplifting. You’ve tried addressing the issues, but nothing changes. It might be time to step back and prioritise relationships that energise you.

By consciously choosing to accept, change, or move away, you reclaim your power. You stop feeling like a victim of circumstances and start feeling like the hero of your own story.

Here’s how I’m applying these principles in my life:

Work: After 16 years in the corporate world, I’ve made the decision to leave. It’s a few months away, but I’ve accepted this choice and committed to giving my best until the final day. Knowing that I’m in control—even when work gets frustrating—has been liberating.

Family: Let’s be real—we can’t choose our family, but we can choose how we engage with them. Instead of fighting to change what I can’t control, I’ve accepted my loved ones for who they are. Funny enough, that acceptance has deepened many of my relationships and made them more joyful.

Now it’s time to look at your own life. What needs transformation? Is there a situation you need to accept? Something you need to change? Or perhaps it’s time to move away from something—or someone—that no longer serves you.

Maybe it’s your eating habits, your exercise routine, or a relationship that’s holding you back. Whatever it is, remember this: you always have a choice. And when you realise that, you step into a position of power and purpose.
