Feeling Burnt Out? Here’s the Simple Habit That Saved My Sanity

Is Your Bucket Empty? Here’s How to Fill It Back Up

Do you find yourself constantly doing things for everyone else? Running at a million miles an hour, making sure everything runs smoothly—yet rarely stopping to check in on you?

It’s easy to fall into the trap of being everything to everyone… and forgetting to be there for you.

But here’s the truth: you can’t pour from an empty bucket.

For me, I love helping others. I love being a mum, a wife, the family manager and pursuing a meaningful career. But I’ve learnt that if I want to perform at my best in all these roles, I need to put my own oxygen mask on first.

That means making time for myself to recharge—guilt-free.

It sounds simple (and it is common sense), but it took me years to implement it properly.

One of my favourite rituals? A quiet house for at least one hour—ideally two or more—with no background noise, no interruptions, and no requests.

Sometimes I clean (because a spotless kitchen fills my soul!). Other times I catch up on personal admin, tackle a passion project, or simply unwind with a good book.

Whatever I choose is entirely up to me—and that’s the magic. It clears my mind, refuels my energy, and resets my focus.

There’s no right or wrong here. Your time is your time. What fills my bucket might not fill yours—and that’s perfectly okay.

First, get clear on what you want. For me, it was simple but powerful:

  • I needed an empty house once a week for at least an hour, ideally two.
  • I wanted my husband to plan and organise this time each week—without me having to chase it up, schedule it, or ask for it.

Clear boundaries are everything. No caving in. No guilt-tripping yourself. You deserve this time, and so do your loved ones—because when you’re at your best, they get the best of you.

In our home, every Sunday my husband takes the kids out—whether it’s to sport or just a trip to the shops. It’s become a non-negotiable. Of course, sometimes life happens, and we shuffle the day around. But the commitment is there.

And when I miss this time? Oh, I feel it. I’m more drained, less patient, and just not quite myself.

It took me a while (and a few mistakes) to figure this out:

Dropping my boundaries:
Letting the kids stay home while I “hid away” didn’t cut it. I could hear everything, and they still came looking for me!

❌ Speaking in code:
Hinting, hoping, or expecting my husband to just know what I needed only led to disappointment and resentment.

Taking on the organising:
Planning where they’d go and when added another job to my list—and that defeated the purpose.

Now, I’m clear. And it works.

  • What recharges you?
  • How can you create space and time for it?

Remember there’s no right of wrong way.

You might be thinking:

“Ann-Marie, I can’t. You don’t understand—there’s no time. You don’t know my life”

And I hear you. I really do.

But let’s think about it this way:
If your child’s health depended on you finding one hour a week just for you—could you make it happen?

Of course you could.

As Jim Rohn said:

“If you really want to do something, you’ll find a way. If you don’t, you’ll find an excuse.”

Here are some ideas:

  • Can you wake up 30 minutes earlier for some peace and quiet?
  • Can you swap babysitting duties with a friend?
  • Could you finish work earlier once a week?
  • Is there something you could outsource (cleaning, groceries)?
  • What’s something you could stop doing—just for now?

You can find a way.
Make yourself a priority—not just for you, but for the people who love you most.

Because when your bucket is full, you show up as the best version of yourself.
