In today’s fast-paced world we are often juggling various commitments such as kids’ school activities, extracurricular engagements, work, household management, social life, and more. The demands of this multitasking often plunge us into a perpetual whirlwind of tasks.
Personally, I’ve experienced the relentless pace of “go, go, go” and the never-ending “do, do, do.” It’s easy to get caught up in this continuous cycle, where the urgency of tasks takes precedence, leaving little room to step back, reflect, and plan.
As Abraham Lincoln wisely noted,
“Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe”
This insightful quote holds a valuable lesson for us, emphasising the importance of pausing for reflection and improvement. Much like a blunt axe requires more time and effort to cut down a tree, our endeavours can benefit from a sharper, more refined approach.
Taking the time to sharpen the metaphorical axe—incorporating thoughtful planning into our lives—unlocks a multitude of benefits, including:
# 1 Efficiency and Effectiveness:
The analogy of chopping a tree vividly illustrates the paramount importance of efficiency. Just as a keenly sharpened axe effortlessly cuts through wood, demanding less energy and time, dedicating efforts to honing our skills, acquiring essential knowledge, and engaging in reflective practices significantly elevates our efficiency and effectiveness in attaining goals.

On a personal note, mastering the art of setting up direct debits for bill payments and configuring my Google Calendar to encompass all commitments and actions initially demanded an investment of time. However, the dividends in terms of time saved have made the initial learning curve undeniably worthwhile.
Additionally, a valuable tip schedule SMS messages. This proactive approach allows me to pre-plan and ensure I never miss another birthday, adding a layer of convenience to my communication habits. While I personally use the Auto Text app, it’s worth noting that there are numerous alternatives available for those seeking similar functionalities.
#2 Risk Mitigation:
Adequate preparation is a powerful tool for risk mitigation. By anticipating challenges, identifying potential pitfalls, and understanding the terrain, we equip ourselves to navigate obstacles more effectively. This proactive approach minimises the likelihood of setbacks and enhances our ability to respond to unforeseen circumstances.
I actively practice risk mitigation, particularly in the realms of investing and financial planning. A prime example is my meticulous examination of worst-case scenarios associated with these endeavours. Through proactive consideration and addressing of potential challenges, I guarantee that I am not only well-equipped but also sufficiently prepared to navigate any unforeseen circumstances that may arise in the course of these financial activities.
#3 Confidence and Competence:
Confidence stems from competence. Spending time sharpening the axe instils a sense of confidence in our abilities. When faced with a task, whether it be a professional project or a personal goal, the assurance that comes from thorough preparation empowers us to approach challenges with poise and determination.
Upon embarking on the journey of parenthood, I encountered the absence of a manual or a definitive guide. In response, I sought education through the Positive Parenting course, “Get Your Kids to Listen without Yelling, Nagging, or Losing Control.”
Over the last five years, completing this course three times has been transformative, playing a pivotal role in instilling a sense of calm in my home. Moreover, it has equipped me with the competence and confidence to implement effective parenting strategies.
#4 Continuous Improvement:
The commitment to sharpening the axe is an acknowledgment that learning is a lifelong journey. By dedicating time to continuous improvement, we embrace a growth mindset. This mindset propels us forward, encouraging innovation, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace new challenges.
Recently, upon scrutinising our family schedule, I identified opportunities to optimise my time utilisation. I consolidated the kids’ school activities on a single day, coordinated a carpool arrangement with another parent, and established recurring snack and dinner lists.

This strategic restructuring not only saved me valuable time and energy but also afforded the added benefit of enjoying more quality moments with the kids, engaging in enjoyable activities together.
Lincoln’s nugget of wisdom: ‘Sharpen your axe before tackling life’s trees.’ Success is not just about effort, but also about smart preparation and continual improvement of knowledge and skills! 🪓🌳
