Reflecting on our journey of hosting seven Au Pairs over 3 to 4 years, I can attest to the profound positive impact they can have on family life. Our journey has been immensely rewarding, and we enthusiastically endorse the Au Pair arrangement.

To find the best fit for your family, it’s crucial to have a well-defined recruitment strategy. Consider what qualities and skills are most important for your family, and then look for candidates who match your criteria. Think about your family’s values, daily routines, and specific needs when making your selection.
It’s crucial to explicitly outline your expectations for the Au Pair. What precise tasks and responsibilities are you assigning to them? In our situation, in addition to childcare, these duties involved managing laundry and meal preparation on specific evenings (with a standing invitation for them to dine with us). We made sure to communicate this clearly during the recruitment process, ensuring they had a clear understanding before joining our family.
#2 Prioritise Onboarding and Training
Allocate sufficient time to thorough onboarding to acquaint your Au Pair with your family’s expectations, routines, and local culture. Keep in mind that this process typically spans 4-6 weeks as they acclimate to household tasks, childcare duties, and any particular requirements specific to your family dynamic.
#3 Establish Clear House Rules
Transparency is paramount. Communicating your house rules and expectations upfront is crucial to prevent misunderstandings.
This practice helps ensure everyone is on the same page. Recognize that your rules may differ from what your Au Pair is accustomed to, so it may be necessary to reiterate them. Allowing any lapses in enforcement can lead to challenges and frustrations for both you and the Au Pair down the line.
Additionally, reinforce positive behaviours by acknowledging when they meet or exceed your expectations. This encouragement helps ensure they continue with the desired behaviour.
#4 Offer Rewards for Staying the Duration
Promote commitment by providing incentives for your Au Pair to stay for the agreed-upon duration, fostering stability for both your family and the Au Pair. Consider offering a $500 bonus for a six-month commitment, and a $1,000 bonus for a year-long commitment as examples of such incentives.
#5 Organise Regular Feedback Sessions
Maintain open communication through scheduled feedback sessions to facilitate prompt issue resolution and ongoing engagement.
In our household, we hosted weekly meetings in the evenings after the kids went to bed to exchange feedback and address any concerns. This regular communication helped us stay aligned and ensure a positive experience for everyone involved.
#6 Have a Clearly Defined Family Schedule
Provide a clear daily or weekly schedule to ensure consistency and reduce uncertainty for both your family and the Au Pair.

Furthermore, the manual serves as an excellent reference point during feedback sessions or instances where expectations are not being met. We discovered that our family manual was an evolving document, continuously updated as we gained insights and experiences.
#8 Provide Feedback Outside the Kids’ Earshot
When providing feedback or discussing any concerns, it’s essential to do so in a private setting away from the children. This not only maintains a positive environment for the kids but also enables constructive discussions with your Au Pair.
For us, this typically occurred once a week during our regular session, after the children had gone to bed.
#9 Include the Au Pair in Family Activities
To nurture a sense of belonging, integrate your Au Pair into family activities and encourage their participation in outings and events. This inclusion helps them feel valued as part of the family.
However, we also noticed that over time, as they formed friendships, they were content spending time with friends and opted not to join us for outings. We understood this as they spent a significant portion of their week with the children.
#10 Ask for Feedback and Help Them Achieve Their Goals
Ensuring a reciprocal exchange of feedback is crucial with your Au Pair. Encourage them to share suggestions for improving their experience, as they often offer valuable insights enhancing both their role and family life.
Additionally, support them in pursuing personal goals during their time with your family. Understanding their aspirations fosters a more fulfilling experience for everyone involved. Incorporating this discussion into your regular catch-ups, ensures ongoing communication and alignment of expectations, contributing to a harmonious and mutually beneficial relationship.
