The Truth About Family Holidays No One Talks About

Bali was outstanding.

We went white water rafting, visited Waterbom Park, had surfing lessons, and enjoyed an incredible lunch at the exclusive Koral Restaurant. Every moment was phenomenal.

But what made it truly special wasn’t just the activities—it was the time together as a family of four. We laughed, talked, and simply enjoyed each other’s company.

Stepping away from our everyday routine gave us the chance to slow down and reconnect.

Towards the end of the trip, I had some one-on-one time with my 10-year-old daughter Chloe. As we sat together, I asked her, “What was your favourite part of the trip?”

She looked up at me and said, “Spending time with my family and being together.”

Her answer stopped me in my tracks. It wasn’t the water slides, surfing lessons or $500 lunch. It was the simple act of being present with each other.

Reflecting on it, I realised how long it’s been since we’ve truly had that kind of time together. Our recent trips to Melbourne were filled with family functions—always busy, always on the move. Chloe didn’t always have our full attention.

But in Bali, she did.

She made up poolside dances and I watched them all. She created funny slang and we laughed until our sides hurt. From breakfast through to dinner, we were side by side—talking, laughing, simply enjoying each other’s company. What she had was our full presence—and to her, that meant more than anything else.

Even though I know kids value our time and attention more than gifts or gadgets, I’d somehow forgotten. I had poured energy into planning the “perfect” trip—activities, bookings, experiences—but what mattered most wasn’t on the itinerary. It was us, together.

The greatest gift we can give our kids—and ourselves—is undivided time. No schedule. No screens. Just being present.

Because those moments? They’re priceless. More than money can buy.
