Taking Time Out for Self

Running a little low in energy or motivation? Maybe you should take some time out for yourself to recharge your batteries. Too busy? Even just 10 minutes can make a huge difference to the way you are feeling and let you refocus your attention.

Here is a quote from Psychology Tools: How to Take a “Time Out”. “When emotions are riding high, communication becomes less clear and healthy. Taking time to calm oneself can open up the door to re-enter a productive dialogue or perform another essential task at home.” This doesn’t always mean taking a time out when you are really angry. Even ordinary situations like being tired of organizing the household, no longer able to focus on a task, or just feeling stressed can all warrant taking some time out for yourself.

If we don’t look after ourselves, we reach a point where we are no longer as productive (or are not performing as well) as we have been and it can negatively affect either our physical or mental health, or both, thus causing ongoing issues. Taking time out to refocus and recharge can improve physical health, relationships and assist us with managing difficult situations.

It is both helpful and healthy to schedule in some time for yourself. If you are at a bit of a loss as to what to do, or want some new ideas to inspire you, please go to this list for some suggestions.

You will probably find that most of these ideas will not be up your ally, but if you find just two or three to try out that is still beneficial. Some activities take hours to do and hence will not be appropriate for everyday situations, but other activities only take minutes and can quickly refresh the mind. My favourite is having a cup of tea! Quick and simple, yet effective 😊.

I have had a very busy couple of months where I feel I haven’t stopped, so this week I am allowing more time for taking it slow and adjusting to a new timetable. I am leaving all non-essential tasks until the coming weeks. My intention after this week is to be able to go back to usual “business” and continue taking shorter periods of time out for self so things don’t build up to this level too quickly. It is all about managing what is going on in your life at this point in time and prioritizing at least a little time for yourself. Sometimes you will need more time than others and whatever you need is what you need to try to schedule in. We all need balance.
