In the 5th grade, at the age of 10, as I was assisting my father by typing a letter on the computer for a customer. While I worked, my father embarked on one of his familiar rants about the complexities of technology, a tirade that persists even nearly 30 years later.

As I sat there listening, I couldn’t help but question him, “Dad, why don’t you go back to school and learn how to use computers?” His response was that he was “too old to learn” and that the era had passed him by.
Fast forward to today, and my father can navigate a computer at a basic level. However, he never fully embraced technology. Throughout his life, he relied on favours from others for tasks as basic as submitting applications and writing letters.
Reflecting on this pivotal memory, I often wonder about the missed opportunities. What if my father had taken the initiative to learn computers back then? Where would he be today? Even if it took him five years to grasp the basics, he would have had 25 years and counting to utilise those skills.
If he had embraced technology and sought assistance, his business and personal life might have taken a vastly different, potentially better trajectory. Instead, he closed himself off to the possibilities.
This anecdote underscores the importance of confronting limiting beliefs. Limiting beliefs are like invisible chains that hold us back from reaching our full potential. They’re the stories we tell ourselves about what we can or cannot achieve, often based on past experiences or societal conditioning.
Identifying and overcoming limiting beliefs is essential for personal growth and success. I’m now 38, the same age my father was when he declared himself too old to learn. At this age, I believe I’m still young with ample time to learn, grow, and achieve. The story of my father serves as a reminder to challenge the narratives we tell ourselves, especially those related to age.
Today, I encourage you to reflect on the stories you’re telling yourself. Are you letting age hold you back from taking action? Remember, age is not a barrier. I recently met a 83-year-old bench pressing 100 kilos which is more than his own weight.
