The most common question I get asked by parents regarding food is how can I stop my kids from snacking on unhealthy food? My answer is always the same and it is simple:

Don’t Buy the Unhealthy Snacks

As I said the answer is simple though may not be easy. I understand.

Often when I make this statement I get a whole bunch of excuses why this can’t happen such as:

  • I buy it to have when visitors come over.
  • If I don’t have it my partner will order sweets on Uber Eats which means we spend more and I feel guilty.
  • Sometimes the kids deserve a treat.
  • When I work hard I need something sweet to eat to give me energy.

Here are 3 tips to help you avoid your kids snacking on Unhealthy food

1. Don’t Store Unhealthy Snacks at Home

Shops and food places are open all the time some even 24 hours a day hence if you need something you can run out to buy it eg is someone is coming over and you want to prepare to serve them.

If someone does come over unannounced be honest and say you don’t buy unhealthy snacks so that you aren’t tempted to snack on it. Personally, I am appreciative when there are no treats, kids get enough at parties or from grandparents. If they stop being your friend because of this, question the friendship.

Remember when something is not available for us to grab in our 3-second impulse to eat something sweet we will either not eat anything or grab an alternative.

2. Hide the Unhealthy Snacks

If you really need to have unhealthy snacks (such as when visitors come over) only buy low volumes and put them away out of sight, like in a box up high.

This means that the kids won’t know about them and also makes it a challenge for you to grab in the spare of the moment. Hence you may decide not to have that unhealthy snack in the moment.

3. Purchase an Alternative Healthier Snack

Instead of having lollies, chocolates, chips, sweet biscuits and other unhealthy treat stock substitute it with healthier options such as rice crackers, nuts, fruit and so forth.

Your body and mind will thank you for it.
