I have been hearing a lot about having a growth mindset a term coined by Carol Dweck a Stamford University Professor. The cartoon animation below by Sprouts is a great, simple explanation of this complex concept.
Takeaways from the video:
- Growth Mindset – embrace problems as opportunities to learn and believe new abilities can be developed with practise. This view creates a love for learning and most great leaders and artists have this in common.
- Fixed Mindset – avoid problems as a fear of failure and believe basic qualities like intelligence or talents are fixed traits.
- Sometimes we do switch from one mindset to the other.
- To embrace a growth mindset we need to celebrate trying eg we should applaud students for any grade if they studied hard.
- To improve we need not to take feedback personally however listen to constructive criticism and understand that it is not us personally being assessed however the results of the work on the one day.
- Effort is part of a journey to a more fun life.
- Enjoy seeing your friends succeed – if you motivate them to succeed you will likely grow too.
- Companies look for employees with a growth mindset as they solve problems and persist despite obstacles.
- The brain grows like any other muscle with training.
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better.
Samuel Beckett
My biggest takeaway was that though I consider myself as a person with a growth mindset watching the video I can see when I have switched over to a fixed mindset without realising. Now I know what I need to work on š.
Please share below in the comments what your biggest takeaway from the video and whether you believe it is possible to make a switch from a fixed to a growth mindset?
