Life in our house is non-stop. Between running our business, keeping the household in order, playing taxi for the kids, and yes—looking after my husband (haha, because we’re a team)—my plate is always full.
So when it comes to dinner, I keep things simple. It saves me time, takes away the stress of deciding what to cook, and lets me focus on what really matters such as spending time with the family.
I use a simple meal map to plan our dinners for the week:
- Monday – Beef
- Tuesday – Stew/Soup
- Wednesday – Chicken
- Thursday – Fish/Seafood
- Friday – Mince Meat
- Saturday – BBQ Steak
- Sunday – Mix It Up (Home Made Pizza, Burgers, BBQ)

Most weeks, I stick with the same recipes until either the kids ask for a change or I’ve had enough of them myself. Usually I change a recipe every 4–6 weeks.
This Week’s Meal Plan
- Monday – Spaghetti Beef Bolognese
- Tuesday – Grah (Croatian Bean and Sausage Soup)
- Wednesday – Butter Chicken with Roti
- Thursday – Salmon or Basa with Rice
- Friday – Mexican Night
- Saturday – BBQ Steak with Veggies
- Sunday – Homemade BBQ Pizza, Burgers, or Cevapi
It might sound boring, but it works. The kids are happy, dinners are stress-free, and I don’t waste time wondering what’s for dinner every night.
FAQs
Q: Don’t you get bored eating the same thing every week?
Not really! Since we only have the same meal once a week, it doesn’t get old too fast. When I’m over it, I just swap in a new recipe with the same meat. Using the meat as the baseline keeps the whole decision-making process simple.
Q: Do you meal prep?
Yes. I plan our meals each Friday, do one big shop on Saturday, and sometimes a small top-up shop throughout the week if needed. I’ll prep a little the night before or early in the morning.
The kids help out too, peeling veggies and making salads. This not only saves me time but also gives me more moments to spend with them in the evenings
Q: Do you have a home-cooked meal every night?
Most nights, yes. Having a meal plan makes it quick and easy. Sometimes we’ll have leftovers if I cooked too much the day before.
Q: What do you do if you don’t feel like cooking?
That happens more than I’d like to admit!😂 But because I already know what’s on the menu and have the ingredients prepared it makes it easier. Usually the hardest part is starting.
Also most of my meals are quick and simple. Music or a podcast usually helps me get into the mood.

Q: Do you ever eat out or get takeaway?
Yes, we’ll usually go out about once a fortnight. I do enjoy eating out, so it’s a nice break.
Q: Don’t you get sick of cooking?
Honestly, yes . Cooking wasn’t “my thing” growing up Mum always did it. Even when I first got married, Neven my husband was the main cook. I only took over so he could focus on the business. I don’t love it, but I value having home-cooked healthy meals for the family, and that makes it worth it.
Why This Routine Works for Us
Keeping things simple takes the stress out of dinner. I don’t waste time every day thinking about “what’s for dinner?”. It’s already sorted. The kids know what’s coming, which means fewer arguments, and we save money by sticking to our weekly shop.
Most importantly, it’s not about the meals being exciting, it’s about us sitting down together as a family, eating well, and keeping that connection strong. So yes, the food might be ‘boring’ (or simple, as I like to call it), but it’s real, healthy, unprocessed food that nourishes us and that’s what truly matters.
