The Innocence of Newborns

One of my friends has just had a baby girl, let’s call her Sophie. I met her when she was 2 weeks old and have just visited her again aged 4 weeks. She is adorable!!!

Sophie is so small and pink with such small eyes and hands! When I hold her I feel how precious she is and have that instinct to protect her and look after her. She is so trusting. She fell asleep in my friend’s arms and my friend passed her over to me. She settled in my arms and continued to sleep soundly, trusting all the while that I was a safe human to be holding her despite her not knowing me. As adults, unless in some kind of emergency situation, it is quite rare that we would allow another strange human to be so responsible for us.

I also realized, at the end as I was driving home, that I had been so focused and mindful with Sophie that I hadn’t thought of my usual stressors while with her. I was so absorbed in her life that I forgot about mine! She has a brand new life, with so much ahead of her, but all she desires in this moment is milk, sleep and love. So simple (says I who does not have to endure the sleepless nights or change the pooey nappies!). It is amazing!

Often when I think of new life I wonder about what sort of world they will grow up into. What difficulties they will face. What the state of the economy will be or if there will be peace. But now with Sophie, so young and innocent, it doesn’t seem to matter. She is a precious gift right now, receiving the best care from my friend and her partner, so she has a great start to life to put her in good stead to manage what eventuates in the future.
